The Dunsmuir Amtrak station is located in central Dunsmuir, close to major downtown points. The station is visited twice daily (once in each direction) by Amtrak's Coast Starlight, the ONLY Amtrak train which operates on the entire west coast from Seattle to Los Angeles.

Although the station is used by the Union Pacific Railroad (recent purchaser of the Southern Pacific RR), there is no Amtrak staff.

Neither tickets, baggage, nor package express shipments are handled at this location. Tickets may be purchased from an Amtrak travel agent, over the telephone from Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or over the internet from Amtrak's home page, http://tickets.amtrak.com.

Originally name "Pusher" by the Southern Pacific Railroad who used the location for servicing and storing locomotives to push trains over the mountains, it was later renamed in honor of Canadian coal baron Alexander Dunsmuir, who like the community and donated a fountain to the city, if the city would change its name. Alexander Dunsmuir also built a mansion in the Oakland Hills, which is a museum today.

As you might suspect from the town's original name, there is a lot of railroad history in Dunsmuir. If you'd like to see some of it today, you need to visit the railroad cam. Dunsmuir is located in the heart of Mt. Shasta recreational areas. There are lakes, parks and campgrounds throughout the area, offering boating, fishing, hiking, or just kickin' back opportunities.

Many local inns and hotels/motels will pick up Amtrak passengers who provide advance notice.
