Originally named "Pusher" by the Southern Pacific Railroad who used the location for servicing and storing locomotives to push trains over the mountains, Dunsmuir was later renamed in honor of Canadian coal baron Alexander Dunsmuir, who liked the community and donated a fountain to the city, if the city would change its name. Alexander Dunsmuir also built a mansion in the Oakland Hills, which is a museum today.
Train enthusiasts can view Dunsmuir railroad activity by visiting the railroad cam.
Dunsmuir is located in the heart of the Mt. Shasta recreational area, offering lakes, parks, campgrounds and ample boating, fishing, or hiking opportunities.
Many local inns and hotels/motels will pick-up Amtrak passengers who provide advance notice.
